01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Along a street leading into the residential neighborhood of Shin-Koiwa, ARIPAN -Arina de panaderia- is a compact bakery where customers select items through a display case and order directly at the walk-up counter. The bakes are modestly sized yet inventive in their combinations of dough and fillings, making it easy to pick up a curated mix for lunch or an afternoon snack.
Savory specialties and classic shiopan
A standout among the savory offerings is the Passion Ham Roll, brushed with anchovy- and garlic-infused olive oil and finished with cheese and mayonnaise. Its punchy aroma and robust richness make it as satisfying alongside an evening drink as it is for a casual meal. The shiopan (salted butter roll) is another favorite, featuring a crisp exterior and the rich fragrance of butter melted into the crumb; it eats well on its own or split open for a sandwich.
Everyday loaves and sweet treats
The shop's daily loaves are equally diverse. A signature choice is the Arena shokupan, prepared via the yudane method with 100% butter and generous milk to create a tender, chewy crumb. Shelves also feature flour-forward alternatives, including ancient-grain spelt bread and fragrant whole-wheat loaves. On the sweeter side, regulars look for the cream pan, filled with smooth homemade custard thickened with rice flour, as well as the melonpan, prized for the contrast between its crisp, vanilla-bean cookie crust and moist interior.
Operating strictly as a takeaway counter without dine-in seating, ARIPAN accepts an array of cashless payment methods, including credit cards and PayPay. The approachable storefront conceals a deeply dedicated approach to prep and baking.
